Platelet-Rich Fibrin Matrix (PRFM) in Walnut Creek, CA
As we age, the elastin fibers in our skin break down, leading to fine lines and wrinkles. As collagen breaks down and we lose facial fat, volume loss and hollows develop.
Dr. Kim offers nonsurgical PRFM treatments to target facial lines, wrinkles, and hollow or sunken areas of the face. This treatment restores volume and radiance to your skin, and it can also be used to treat thinning hair.
What Is PRFM?
PRFM stands for platelet-rich fibrin matrix, and it is the next generation of advanced platelet-rich plasma (PRP) treatments. Similar to PRP treatments, PRFM uses platelets and natural growth factors taken from a patient’s blood to rejuvenate their skin.
Dr. Kim creates a more refined form of PRP with the SELPHYL® System, which removes virtually all red and white blood cell contaminants. This leaves PRFM with highly concentrated platelets and growth factors that, when injected into the skin, provide tissue regeneration and repair. Dr. Kim also uses the SELPHYL® system to create PRFM injections with added calcium chloride to provide longer-term benefits.
What Are the Benefits of PRFM?
Long-Lasting Effects
PRFM injections last longer than comparable PRP injections because the growth factors are held within a fibrin matrix. This allows the growth factors in your platelets to be concentrated and undergo sustained release.
This means that PRFM injections can continue working for days or weeks, while PRP injections stop regenerating within hours or days.
No Allergic Reactions
Unlike artificial fillers or anesthesia used in other procedures, PRFM carries virtually no risk of allergic reaction. The active ingredients of PRFM are taken directly from your blood.
This means that your immune system will recognize the injection as beneficial. Therefore, patients should not experience significant swelling, soreness, or other forms of reaction common with other injections.
Natural Regeneration
PRFM provides natural regenerative effects that help restore your skin without artificial stimuli. These injections can treat wrinkles, fine lines, thinning skin, and more, all with the natural properties of your body.
For people concerned with the ingredients in cosmetic injectables, PRFM is an ideal option, as it is made from your own regenerative platelets.
How Is PRFM Performed?
Step 1: Consultation
The first step in your PRFM treatment is a consultation with Dr. Kim. She will evaluate your current condition and concerns to ensure that SELPHYL® PRFM injections will achieve your desired results. She will also answer any questions you have about the treatment and provide you with a personalized quote.
Step 2: Extraction
Dr. Kim will draw a blood sample from you during your treatment. This is done the same way blood is drawn for blood tests or blood donations. A small needle is inserted into a vein in your arm and attached to a tube. Once the needed blood is drawn, the needle is withdrawn, and a bandage is applied.
This process may be mildly uncomfortable but should have no side effects. The blood draw can result in minor bruising.
Step 3: Purification
After your blood sample is drawn, it will be placed in a SELPHYL® machine. This device will spin your blood sample in a centrifuge to separate your platelets and growth factors from your red and white blood cells.
The sample will then be moved to a vacuum-sealed tube containing a calcium chloride solution. This finishes converting the concentrated platelets into a golden-yellow PRFM solution. The final conversion process can take 20 to 30 minutes.
Unlike PRP injections, there should not be any trace of red or pale pink in the sample since virtually all the red blood cells were removed during the centrifuging process.
Step 4: Injections
Once the PRFM injection has been made, it is injected into the target areas with fine needles. These injections can be applied to virtually any area but are usually used to address facial concerns.
Combination Procedures
PRFM injections can be performed alone or in combination with other cosmetic procedures.
Patients may choose to combine their treatment with one or more of the following:
- Microneedling with PRP
- Dermal fillers
- Neuromodulators (BOTOX® Cosmetic, Dysport®, or XEOMIN®)
PRFM injections can also be used to speed the healing process after a plastic surgery operation.
What Can I Expect After PRFM Injections?
Recovery
Since PRFM is made from your own blood platelets, you should experience no significant adverse effects following your injections. Some patients may experience minor itching, swelling, bruising, or redness in the treatment area, but this should fade within 24 to 48 hours. If PRFM is combined with microneedling, it is not unusual to experience peeling during the first week after treatment.
Most patients can resume daily activities within an hour or two of treatment. Dr. Kim recommends that patients drink more fluids than usual and refrain from vigorous exercise for 24 hours after having blood drawn.
Results
Unlike PRP, PRFM injections continue to work for weeks after the procedure. This means it may take three to six weeks for initial results to become visible.
It may take up to six months before you see your final results because the platelet solution regenerates your tissues and stimulates collagen production over time.
For best results, PRFM treatments should be performed in a series about one month apart.
Frequently Asked Questions About PRFM
Q. How long does PRFM take to perform?
Dr. Kim suggests scheduling an hour for your appointment due to the length of time the SELPHYL® system takes to convert your blood sample into PRFM. Some appointments may take slightly more or less time.
Q. Am I a good candidate for PRFM?
Ideal candidates for PRFM are people concerned with wrinkles, fine lines, collagen loss, or sagging skin. Candidates should be in good health and have no blood-transmissible diseases.
Be sure to inform Dr. Kim before the procedure if you are taking any form of blood-thinning medication or if you have drunk alcohol within the last two to three days, as this may impact treatment.
Q. How much does PRFM cost?
The cost of PRFM treatments will vary depending on the condition you want to treat and the number of injections needed to treat that condition. Dr. Kim will provide you with a personalized quote for your PRFM treatment cost during your consultation.
Q. How long do PRFM results last?
For most patients, PRFM provides long-lasting natural results. Current information suggests that results last at least one to two years and may last longer with proper care and a healthy lifestyle.
Q. How many PRFM treatment sessions will I need?
The number of sessions required will vary depending on the extent of the targeted area and the degree of correction required. Dr. Kim usually suggests between one and three PRFM sessions spaced about a month apart to achieve ideal results.
