Microneedling with PRP
What is Microneedling
Microneedling, also known as collagen induction therapy, is an office based procedure where fine needles are used to crease hundreds of tiny holes in the epidermis and dermis (top and middle layer of skin) activating the body’s natural healing and regeneration. This minimally invasive skin-rejuvenation procedure creates minute dermal injury and triggers the skin’s natural recovery process, resulting in new elastin and collagen to repair the tiny wounds. This results in improved appearance of fine lines, age and sun spots, scars, pore size and texture.
What is PRP
PRP is platelet rich plasma. Platelets are some of the first responders to any type of injury and they release a myriad of growth factors and cytokines that aid in the repair process and calm down inflammation. PRP with microneedling takes advantage of the natural healing process while adding an additional boost, resulting in improved recovery and stimulated rejuvenation. PRP is obtained by drawing a small amount of blood from your arm into a sterile tube. The tube is then centrifuged to separate your plasma, which we use for your treatment, from the red and white blood cells which settle to the bottom of the tube. PRP has been used for years in orthopedic surgery, oral and maxillofacial surgery and reconstructive surgery for years to help stimulate wound healing.
What Does It Treat?
Microneedling helps improve the appearance of one lines, wrinkles and scars on the face and body by taking advantage of the skin’s natural healing response to injury. Areas of the face that can be treated:
corner mouth lines
general skin improvement
Is The Procedure Painful?
Due to the fine gauge of the needles there is very minimal to no discomfort. Numbing cream is applied for 20-30 minutes beforehand to help minimize any discomfort
Microneedling is an outpatient procedure with no downtime. If combined with PRP, or platelet rich plasma, we do recommend not washing the face until after you return home to allow maximum penetration of the PRP. Skin may be reddish with a “flushed” look immediately afterwards but by the next day there is just a mild flush to the cheeks. There may be visible marks from the needle along the forehead and jawline, but this is very short-lived if it does occur. These marks will resolve within 72 hours. The additional benefit after micro needling is the improvement in your normal topical regimen. The hundreds of tiny channels in the skin allow greater depth of penetration of your normal skin care products, which means better efficacy!
How Many Treatments Will I Need?
We generally recommend at least series of 3 sessions, but some patients see results after the first treatment. Treatments are spaced about 4-6 weeks apart with maintenance on a yearly basis.
